In my Pre-Production for Story class, we are developing three stories, the main one I'm working on being Alienation, especially as both the main character and I are Deaf. In this story, a Deaf man enters a coffee shop to buy a coffee, but is confronted by the prejudice of the barista, who won't accommodate his hearing loss. The combination of this and wearing hearing aids in a busy coffee shop creates an overwhelming amount of sensory overload and distress, so he retreats to the coffee shop's bathroom to calm down.

When he exits the bathroom, however, he finds himself in what seems to be a completely different place, a liminal maze of hallways and no exit in sight. As he starts to explore, he realizes that something is behind him, and begins to run, prompting the monster following to give chase. He finds a door eerily reminiscent of the coffee shop he just left and bursts through, seemingly safe, before looking around and realizing that, while the coffee shop he is now in has similar furniture, it is filled with alien patrons.

His pursuer then bursts through the door, and while he is scared for a moment, he realizes that all the "monster", or alien, as he now realizes, wanted was to give him his coffee.

What I worked on this week was mainly character concept art. At this time my teammates and I have not managed to settle on a specific time period, so myself and two other people decided to do three different character designs, based on different time periods. Mine was the 80s.

A full body, bust, and side view of a Deaf man with light brown skin. He has pale beige hearing aids in both ears and is dressed in all-black punk style clothing with a short mohawk. In between these are drawings of the same character looking over his shoulder at different angles. In the top right corner is an enlarged drawing of the back and side of a basic hearing aid

I based this design on 80s punk styles, and researched what hearing aids looked like in the 80s (cochlear implants were not available to adults at this time, as they were very new inventions).
